Europe’s Multi-Dimensional Crisis: Migration, Economy & Security
CYA takes on contemporary Europe!
The summer session II course, MS385 Europe’s Multi-Dimensional Crisis: Migration, Economy and Security saw professors Ritsa Panagiotou, Angeliki Dimitriadi and Thanos Dokos lead students through a complex, multi-layered and at times interlinked exploration of the issues that impact the fabric and the very future of Europe. The course focused on the challenge of irregular migration and recent refugee crisis, the ongoing financial/ economic crises in Greece and Europe, and the multiple security challenges both inside Europe and its Eastern and Southern neighborhoods.
The class journeyed to Brussels – the heart of European politics in order to get an insider’s look at various EU institutions. They visited the European Commission, the Emergency Response Centre (that coordinates and sends European humanitarian aid throughout the world), the European Policy Centre (Independent Think Tank on European affairs), the External Action Service and the Directorate General for Justice/ Rights of the Child.
In each institution, high ranking officials greeted students and were happy to take questions and engage in discussion after their presentations. The students also had the chance to walk around Brussels and explore the Capital of Europe on their own!
