CYA / DIKEMES Public Lecture: “The Grave of the Griffin Warrior at Pylos”
Wednesday 6 December at 7.00 p.m. at the CYA / DIKEMES Auditorium
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to our lecture “The Grave of the Griffin Warrior at Pylos” given by the Co-directors of the Palace of Nestor Excavations, Jack Davis and Sharon Stocker.
The University of Cincinnati archaeological excavations at the Palace of Nestor, Pylos resumed on 18 May 2015 for the first time since 1969.
During the course of the campaign, the so-called grave of the “Griffin Warrior” was discovered a few hundred meters from the Palace. This presentation will describe the excavation of this remarkable grave and discuss finds found in it. This unique, undisturbed burial affords an unparalleled opportunity to examine aspects of Early Mycenaean funerary ritual, gender association with grave goods, and burial structure that cannot be obtained through more standard multi-individual burial contexts. The talk is intended for a general audience.
We are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday 6 December at 7.00 p.m. at the CYA / DIKEMES Auditorium (5 Plateia Stadiou, Kallimarmaro, 2nd fl.)
