Dear Stephen Dierkes, based on your experience with CYA, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester or summer abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
The first beneficial experience I had was planning for the trip to Greece. Working with and calling the consulate, airline, and testing sites to insure I was properly adhering to COVID restrictions was a big task, but I'm better off because of it. It gave me a taste of what post-college (real) life is like! It also made the semester that much more enjoyable.
When I got here, adjusting to a new environment and schedule (especially after a stagnant fall semester at home) was a bit of a shock. But it gave me an opportunity to practice flexibility.
It was great to meet a new crew of professors with a different take and style of teaching than those back at home. Even with zoom being our means of communication, our classes felt tight and coherent. If I have to, I think I would feel comfortable reaching out to any of my professors for help in my professional life later down the line. I'd also feel comfortable reaching out just to say hello!
What advice do you have for prospective students who are interested in or planning to study abroad with CYA?
Hit the road running! Don't wait for opportunities to fall into your lap. They will, but seek out some for yourself!
