Learning from Athens – Documenta 14 Opening events April 6-8

CYA Spring and Summer semester students will have the privilege of witnessing this monumental exhibition first-hand during their time studying abroad in Athens.

Documenta 14, one of the world’s biggest international modern art exhibitions will take place for the first time in both Athens and Kassel in 2017.

Beginning on April 8 and running until July 17, more than 130 artists will display their works during the exhibition throughout the museums, buildings and public spaces in Athens. The exhibition will include paintings, installations, music and film festivals. The opening public events commencing April 6-8, will take place at locations including Kotzia, Syntagma and Avdi squares as well as the Areopagitou pedestrian walkway.

The main issues explored in this year’s exhibition are the refugee crisis, the financial crisis, restitution problems and censorship. Documenta 14’s public programmes are extensive, and include “The Parliament of Bodies”, “34 Exercises of Freedom” and “The Open Form Societies”.

The exhibition is expected to attract a high volume of visitors to Athens and an exciting buzz of activity, according to Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis, this will place the capital “at the heart of cultural interest.” Last year’s Documenta 13 exhibition attracted a record number of more than 905,000 visitors.
