George N. Hatsopoulos, Former Chairman of the CYA Board of Trustees, dies at 91

We are deeply sad to announce that George N. Hatsopoulos passed away in Lincoln, MA at the age of 91 after a long illness.

George N. Hatsopoulos, Former Chairman of the CYA Board of Trustees, dies at 91 hatsop 2

George was a professor of Thermodynamics at MIT and a man of a strong enterprising spirit. His creation, the Thermo Electron Corporation, which he founded in a garage in 1956 grew to become a Fortune 500 company. He was CEO and later Chairman of the Board of ‘Thermo’ until his retirement. He was an author, a recipient of numerous awards, and a consultant to several US Presidents.

George served loyally as a Trustee of CYA for 46 years and as Chairman of its Board of Trustees for 33 of those years (from 1970-2003). The Board paid tribute to his vital leadership and noted on his departure from the chairmanship that “he was the driving force during CYA’s formative years and the leading proponent in CYA’s acquiring ownership of its educational and administrative facilities”. CYA owes a lot to George; he and his wife Daphne have been CYA’s biggest benefactors.

The CYA family extends to Daphne and to their children, Nicho and Marina and to their families, warm condolences and sympathy for the passing of this great man.
